Colours

Use of colour for business purposes needs a bit of thought, because you’re going to be using it in different ways: printed on your letterhead, on your website, and of course on your workwear.

However, getting exactly the same colours across different media can be tricky. For example, try printing out the ring of colours on the right of this page, and then compare with the on-screen colours. I’ll bet that some are quite different (probably the pure blue and red).

With regard to clothing, different manufacturers have different interpretations of standard colours. For example, “Navy Blue” can vary from merely a darkish blue to almost black. There is also a tendency to give colours fancy names. For example, a light grey can appear as “Light Oxford” or “Heather” (when was heather ever grey?).

Some tips:

  • Where different garments need to be of the same colour -- e.g. polo shirts and sweat shirts -- we’ll try to find what’s needed from the same manufacturer. However, where the garments have to come from different manufacturers -- e.g. polo shirt vs. jacket vs. cap -- this isn’t possible.

  • Don’t make the garment colours very specific -- e.g. some particularly subtle shade of turquoise. Even if we do find a garment to match, there is no guarantee that the manufacturer won’t change the colour between different batches, or indeed drop it from the range altogether.

  • Keep fancy colours for the logo. There are over 400 thread colours available (for the thread that we use), so there’s plenty of choice.

  • Be aware of the contrast between logo colours and garment colours.
    • Bright colours look good against dark materials.
    • Don’t just go for black-on-white or white-on-black.
    • Middling colours work on both light and dark backgrounds
(e.g. printed on white paper, embroidered on a black polo shirt).

  • Two-colour logos work well.

  • The only sure way to match a colour is against a physical sample that you send us.
