Sizing

Garment sizing is perennially tricky, where you are not actually trying things on. Different manufacturers have different interpretations of sizes, and sometimes are not even consistent within their own product range.

Here are a few tips:

  • Quoted sizes tend to be body sizes, not garment sizes. So a 38” chest is what you actually measure.

  • Casual-style garments, like Polo shirts, tend to be quite generously sized.

  • Women’s fit garments tend to be neater-fitting, and in particular may be significantly shorter in the body.

  • With jackets, it’s important to get the sleeve length right, even if the body is then a bit generous. So it’s better to size by height, rather than chest.
    • e.g. Small = up to 5’7”, Medium = 5’9”, Large = 5’11”, XL = 6’2”.

  • Children’s sizes are often quoted by age and/or measurement; obviously you need to take into account whether the child is small/average/big for their age.

  • If in doubt, go bigger -- none of us gets smaller with age!
